Labor Day

Ah, Labor Day. The unofficial “last hurrah of Summer”.

The arrival of Labor Day means the unofficial end of summer. Either way, Labor Day is a welcome weekend for almost everyone, it is often marked by weekend getaways, a relaxing time at home with the family, barbecues in the park, or for tens of millions of Americans, road trips.

My memories of those trips include my brother, and I each having a square board with 25 spaces with 24 different images of things we were to look for as we drove. When we spotted, a stop sign, a school or a tractor, we would look for the symbol on the board and, slide a little window across that spot. It wasn’t complicated, but it forced us to take in the scenery and mildly interact with each other instead of fighting.

Here are some simple guidelines for your road trip, barbecue, day on the lake or staycation:

Decide in advance where you’ll stop for meals. Even if it’s a rough estimate it will prevent driving for too long, stopping at restaurants with long lines, and grumpy children/family members.

Fill up with gas, water, and snacks before you go. Labor Day is notorious for traffic congestion due to travelers and accidents, and you never want to get caught on an empty stomach in blocked traffic. A Picnic Deluxe Cooler is crafted of 600D polyester vinyl with rubber grips, this cooler features silver panels and piping, insulated interior, waterproof exterior pocket, and durable zippers with pull tabs. It is embroidered with up to three initials in a silver/gray thread.

A Party Beverage Cooler is a perfect addition to the lake or barbecue. This insulated tote is the ideal solution for cooling, carrying and dispensing beverages. Crafted of heavy-weight vinyl—inside and out—this portable cooler features a bottle and can opener, sturdy reinforced handles and a front pocket for easy storage. It is embroidered with your choice of last name or two first names separated by an ampersand in coordinating thread colors.

I can’t stress this enough; bring travel games, books, and a portable DVD player. Babies, siblings, and even travel companions tend to get tired all at the same time, and there is nothing better than being able to pop in a DVD or give a colorful book to a toddler who is becoming anxious. A Kids Travel Set makes traveling a whole lot easier. Three different Sky Blue pads include one for ABC’s, one for tic-tac-toe and one that has space to connect the dots and an area for “I Spy”. Pads come in a red-trimmed mesh bag durable enough to handle your busy life.

Make sure you pack for travelling.

A Credit Card Case makes a great alternative to a bulky wallet. Fashioned in sleek Black leatherette, this case features an engraved brushed silver plate and eight double-sided slots for credit cards, IDs and miscellaneous documents.

A trip to the lake or water park will require some extra planning, such as bathing suits, sunscreen, towels, etc.

Our Striped Canvas Tote Bag is the perfect on-the-go accessory. Fashioned in well structured canvas, this nautically designed tote features a handsome navy blue and creamy natural striped pattern. Leave early, if possible and try to beat the traffic. If you have to work a full day on Friday, leave immediately after work to avoid driving too late at night. That means pack the night before!

The biggest part of the last throw down of the summer is to get out!

It’s your chance to make a trip to that one place you say “some day I’m going to go there.” Well there is no better time to go than during a long weekend! Take a drive by the National Park, Forest, or Conservation Area near your home. These places are usually great for an old fashioned picnic– sandwiches or cold fried chicken, deviled eggs, lemonade, and brownies.

The National Park Service has a great site, and searchable database of several resources.
